San Marino Tribute September 9, 2009
Former San Marino resident Terry Chapman, founder and retired CEO of Chapman Insurance of Pasadena, has been honored by the California State Legislature with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his long time support of nonprofit social service organizations.
Chapman received the award last month at a surprise ceremony during a meeting in San Francisco.
Terry and his son Greg have provided more than $5.125 million to California non-profits through the Chapman Charitable Foundation since 2000, and created the means for non-profits to save more than $25 million in insurance premiums.
“I was surprised to get the award and honored to receive it,” said Chapman. “It was a humbling experience. I didn’t do any of these things for the recognition.”
The Legislature bestowed its honor because of Chapman’s contributions to the Community Health Centers of California, which is a consortium of social services clinics for the indigent in nearly 300 communities. Chapman was also a prime mover in the founding of the Clinic Mutual Insurance Co., a non-profit company which is owned by all the Community Health Center policyholders.
“Terry’s vision of offering nonprofits the opportunity to create their own insurance company through Clinic Mutual Insurance provided the vehicle by which the community clinics have been able to save more than $25 million in premiums for medical malpractice and liability coverage,” said Hermann Spetzler, a founder of Clinic Mutual and CEO of Open Door Clinic in Arcata. “That represents a level of economy that has had a huge impact on ensuring that a community’s most needy will receive the urgent health care they require.”
The Legislature’s resolution also cited Chapman’s involvement in other community activities including the White House Task Force on Paratransit Services, The Consortium for Human Services, the San Marino Schools Foundation, the Boy Scouts of America, San Marino National Little League and Knights of Malta.
Chapman Insurance has also been given The Business Partner of the Year Award by the Association of Community Human Services Agencies of Los Angeles County.
Chapman Insurance now insures more than 2,200 non-profit and social service organizations throughout the western United States and has built a reputation of unparalleled knowledge, expertise and service.
Chapman’s other San Gabriel Valley involvements include the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, Rotary International and service on the Advisory Board of Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services, which will be honoring him as Mentor of the Year in October.
Chapman’s involvement with the Community Health Centers dates back to 1967. There are now nearly 300 centers which are policyholders in California, New Mexico and Arizona. Clinic Mutual Insurance Co. became licensed in 1988 as a nonprofit insurance provider owned by each of the centers.
“Terry’s original concept has translated into a vitally important and ongoing approach to delivering quality care to a population often ignored,” said Spetzler.
After Founding Chapman & Associates Insurance Brokers in 1973, Terry grew the company to what has now become the largest broker in the country specializing exclusively in nonprofit social service organizations.
Chapman has served on the Pasadena Arts Council, Rotary Club, and Pasadena Jaycees. He has been a Tournament of Roses member since 1970 and served on the San Marino Schools Foundation Board. He is a member of the Pasadena Optimist Club, The Order of Malta, and serves on the advisory board for Optimist Youth Homes and Family Services.
He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the California State Legislature for his work with Community Health Centers and Chapman & Associates received the Community Partners Award from the Association of Community Human Service Agencies of Los Angeles.
In 2000, Terry and Greg Chapman established the Chapman & Associates Charitable Foundation which to date has given more than $5,100,000 to over 400 non-profit organizations.
